SEO Tools

Heres a link to the SEO tools that ive been using. There are many more available for free and im sure some of them are just as good. http://www.seotoolset.com

You will need to sign up for a free 30 day trial. I strongly recommend doing this.

Once inside you will have the choice of several different tools. Just enter your sites domain name and they will all display a report on your website for whatever aspect of your webpage the tool is designed to report on.

Id definetly use at least the keyword density tool. This is a great way to see if you are being punished by GOOGLE/MSN/YAHOO for any reason.

Just type in your domain name for whichever page you want to analyse and a report will be created detailing your description tags and page title and stuff.

Im pretty sure nearly every synthasite user that trys this will have punishable errors that they did not know about. Give it a try now!

The other tool ive been using is the competitors link tool this is great because it allows you to enter a competitors domain name and see which sites link to them.
It even tells you the pagerank of the webpage that links to them and a link to that page.

If your competitors have high pagerank links then you will also need them to keep up. Click on the high PageRank ones and try to add your link to that page also. Look for the "add url" or "suggest your site" link.

This is a great little tool and will really help you to get great links from related web pages.

On Page SEO

These are the on page elements we can change using synthasite and how other web design programmes refer to them.

1) Window Title. More commonly know as The Title Tag. This should be between 6 and 12 words.

2) Description. More commonly know as Meta Description Tag. This should be between 12 and 24 words.

3) Tags. I'm not sure what these are for and i suspect that they are useless. Ive used several tools that pick up the window title and description tags but none have ever picked up on my site tags. These are the ones in the publishing settings on synthasite. I could be wrong about this so if anyone else has found a tool that picks them up please let me know at cmdceramics@yahoo.com

Synthasite does not have the meta keywords tag available at the moment but I've been assured that it will be very very soon. One interesting thing I've noticed is that the description words should all be included in your keyword tag ( once available) Google will punish you if they are not. So anyone that is using the description tag is already being punished for not having the same keywords

Theres nothing we can do about this, but wait for synthasite to release the keyword update.

Choosing your Window title:

Use only your main keywords. The less words you use for this the more "weight" each word will receive in search results. Do not use something like "Welcome to our homepage".

Think about it for a minute.

You want to use something specific to your page that you think people will type in to Google when looking for similar products/information.

So for my website i would use "Kitchen and bathroom wall and floor tiling contractor in London"

Now we need to make this as short as possible, Take out the and's and in's
I would use something like this Kitchen Bathroom tiling contractor Walls Floors

Another important thing to remember is not to use the same word more then twice.

Choosing your description text:

Some search engines will display the description tag in search results for your keywords.

Your description text should have all of your keywords in it, you will be punished if they are not.

However this should also be written in sentances for humans to read, keep the and's and in's this time.

This should be between 12 and 24 words long. Give a little sales pitch.

Something like "Londons best wall and floor tiling contractor dealing with kitchens and bathrooms on an everyday basis"

As this could be shown in the search results we want it to say something thats going to appeal to searchers and make them click on your website.

Link Exchange, Keywords and Anchor Text

Ok by now you should be indexed by Google. When you are indexed by Google it will return regularly to check your site for updates, new links, new pages and any other changes you make.

The next step is to exchange links with other related web pages.

I'll use my website as a guide. If you have a look at my website http://www.cmdceramics.com you will see that im a tiling contractor in London. So its very important for me to swap links with other tile related websites.

When Google returns to check your site it will also follow any links from your site to see where they lead to. If these links take you to other related pages Google will throw more weight behind that link and it will help your search rankings. Its also better still if the page you are linking to uses the same keywords that you are using on your webpage.

Its not advisable to link to unrelated pages to often as Google will punish you for this and it will count against you on your search rankings.

Anchor text is also very important. Anchor text is the text you see before a link such as:

London based wall and floor tiling contractor http://www.cmdceramics.com

Google will also throw more weight behind these type of links so you should use this as often as you can. As you can see my anchor text includes several keywords specific to my website.

Keywords are the words you think people will type in to Google when looking for whatever product, service or information your website is about. So for mine: tiler in London, wall tiler in London, floor tiler in London, tiling contractor....................

Your anchor text should be a sentence or two about what you do but should also include your most important keywords.

At present Synthase users cant add keywords to their websites but we will be able to very soon! Hopefully within the next few weeks, so we should still add this in the anchor text for when we can add keywords to our websites.

Now lets exchange links with someone.

There are several ways to exchange links. Firstly i would start by submitting to as many directories as possible. A directory is a search engine. So being in as many of these is the most important step to getting your site noticed.

For my site i would go to Google and search for "tiles directory" and when the search results come back it should include loads of directories with a subcategory for tiles and tilers and stuff. Open one of these and look for a "add url" or "submit you site" link. Click on the link and fill out all the boxes with your website information. Try it now heres the free index web link http://www.freeindex.co.uk click on advertise your site for free and submit your site there. This will also help when getting indexed by google.

Id better mention here that when creating links http://www.cmdceramics.com is not the same as www.cmdceramics.com although these may both take you to your website. Pick one that works and stick to it for all your links because google still see's these as different destinations.

Directories are great for linking to but can take alot of time because you have to fill in all the information to each of them. They will help so dont give up.

Also directories dont always ask for a reciprocal link back to them ie. they link to you but you dont have to link to them. These are one way links and the best links you can get.

Two way links or reciprocal links are links to anywhere that you also have a link to on your website. heres an example i find a tiling shop down the road from me then send an email asking them to exchange links. They agree and ask me to also add a link to their website. So my customers or clients can find them from my website and their clients can find me from their website.

This is another good way to get links although not quite as good as one way links. Google see's it like this. If someone is willing to link to you without asking for a link back to them, then your website must be trustworthy and useful. This will benefit you in the search rankings too.

For reciprocal links i would google search "tiling shops in london add link" which should return loads of tile shop web pages with a "add your link" link. Click on this and see what they ask you to do. Usually they will have some html code that you need to add to your synthasite site using a html widget. Tell them what page its on and they will add a link back to your website.

There are also several link exchange programs available online ive used two of these and they both make exchanging links easier. Try these. www.linkmarket.net and www.link2me.com you can register for free and both allow free members upto 5 free link exchanges per day! Remember though only related sites are good link partners.

Google will pick up on your links whenever it visits the page that contains them. My website gets a visit from googles spider every week or two. You can check when google last visited your site by typing your web address into a google search after being indexed. Under the description of your site in the results it will say "cached" click on this to see what your site looked like the last time googles spider last visited and it will also have a date for when it last visited.

Getting Indexed and PageRank

So youve created your synthasite website, but its not showing up in Google searches. Firstly you will need to get indexed by Google. The best way to think of Google is like a "Library" and you need it to have a copy of your "book" so that people can read it.

Your website needs to be submitted to Google so it can be searched for and this can take several months to happen after you submit it.

Ive read a great tip to speed this up but you will need to download the Google toolbar. Once you have the toolbar go to settings, then options, then more and check the box next to pagerank and page info. This will display the pageRank tool in the toolbar.

PageRank is a guide to how important Google thinks that specific webpage is based on a 0 to 10 ranking. This is page specific not site specific. So a website can have a PageRank 3 on say its homepage and no PageRank on all its other pages or it could be PageRank 1 on all pages.

If you can get a link to your website from a PageRank 6 or Higher (7,8,9 or 10) Google will index your website within 24 Hours.

I only found this out after i had already been indexed, but i got afew friends to link to me from Facebook and it still went through very quickly.

PageRank is improved by getting Links to your website from pages with a higher Pagerank then your page.

Heres a link to my website for those that dont know what a link is: http://www.cmdceramics.com/tiler-london.php
